Σύνοψη

The Byzantium film with documentary and fiction elements it explores the frustrated multicultural history of Byzantine Empire Greece, Yugoslavian and Cyprus - island of Aphrodite – reflecting the greek-roman (christianity) culture. The film focus on the myths of Byzantium, of DIGΗENIS AKRITAS a Greek legend and hero who protected the borders of Byzantium during the Byzantium times (filage tis akres tou byzantiou, tous ellines apo kathe kako...san iraklis ton ellinon...palikaria kai areti !!!) and on the myth of Aphrodite - Goddess of Love and Beauty. The Tradition states that he passed from Cyprus and the stone of Romiou/Dighenis at Aphrodite’s birth place was thrown by Dighenis Akritas-also called DIGHENIS AKRITAS BASILEIOS, Byzantine epic hero celebrated in folk ballads (Akritic ballads) and in an epic relating his parentage, boyhood adventures, manhood, and death based on a historical character.

Περίληψη

Dighenis Akritas, the ideal medieval Greek hero, is a bold warrior of the Euphrates frontier, the son of a Saracen emir converted to Christianity by the daughter of a Byzantine general; he was a proficient warrior from the age of three and spent the rest of his life defending the Byzantine Empire from frontier invaders. The Akritans were border warriors who defended the Eastern frontier of the Empire from invading bands of Arabs, Persians, Saracens and Turks. Also our tradition of the myth of Aphrodite - Goddess of Love and Beauty- states that the goddess was born at the stone of Romiou – ‘She rose out of the sea foam and for this they called her aphrodite (foam – rise). In the western derived civilization we often forget to adequately study the history of civilizations from which we do not directly descend from. This is a mistake. By ignoring many great civilizations of the past we deny ourselves very relevant lessons which are taught by these civilizations. The Byzantine Empire was one of the greatest of European civilizations. The Byzantine civilization, if not the Empire, could be argued to have begun in the year 324 AD. This is the year in which Constantine the Great created Constantinople often called "New Rome" and ended with the fall of Constantinople in 1453 AD. From the 4th century AD forward, ancient Greek Literature gives way to the Christian one. The next great moment of Greek literature is the Byzantine literature, which displays a great variety of forms and despite its mainly theological character it is the spiritual expression of the Mediaeval Greek world. The influences of the Greeks can be traced back to the reverberations of the ancient Greek process of thinking and the Byzantine civilization, the ideas of Renaissance and above all, the oral and poetic creation of the Greek people (Epic of Digenis Akrites 9th- 11th century, historic akritika songs [songs describing the lives and feats of Akrites], songs for the klephts). Akritika songs are folk songs referring to the life of Akrites, the military body of the Byzantine state who, according to the chronographers of that time, were the vigilant defenders of the borders. Based on these songs, the Epic of Digenis Akrites was written by an unknown poet. It is a very long poem, the first written monument of Modern Greek literature.

Byzantine Empire, the Empire that lived more than all the others in human history was undoubtedly a Greek Empire. The Great Byzantine Empire lived for 1100 years and it was the successor of the Roman Empire. Rome managed after long and difficult wars to occupy metropolitan Greece and the Greek states of the east, Egypt, Syria and Asia minor. After that incident came an unavoidable "response": Superior Greek civilization conquered Rome! (The Greek Spirit) I must note here that Romans were a Greek tribe and it was very easy for them to understand and accept the metropolitan and the Hellenistic Greek cultures. So the Roman empire slowly transformed to a Greek Empire and that became clearer with the establishment of the Greek city of Byzantion as the capital of the Empire instead of Rome. Byzantium renamed Constantinople in honor of the Emperor Constantine that established it as the capital of the Empire. Divine Greek language and specifically in its Attic form, took the place of the Latin that used to be considered as the official language, even though the Greek was always the common language in all the eastern part of the Empire and in Rome that all the Superior class people used Greek language instead of Latin and they were very proud of it! So the Byzantine Empire's official language was Greek. Also the education was Greek, including, Epic poetry (Homer Iliad and Odyssey), Philosophy (all Great Greek philosophers) and geometry, astronomy and mechanics. When the German tribes destroyed and occupied the Western part of the Empire (todays French, Spain and Italy including Rome), the Empire had under its power Greece, Sisely and south Italy, Asia minor, Syria, Egypt and Cyrhnaika, all Greek territories, so the population was all Greek with some other minorities. So the Byzantine Empire was fairly called by most of the western historians as "the Greek Empire" and it was a great glorious state that saved and protected the famous Greek culture and Nation for more than a thousand years till the sword of the Ottoman turks fell upon the Empire that was betrayed from the Pope of Rome during the 4th crusade that destroyed the Empire, the continues attacks by the Western forces and the fanaticism of certain monks that instead of joining the army and protect their country used to go into monasteries and become monks. Byzantium fall in 1453 and its last Emperor Heroic St.Constantine IB'Palaiologos died in the gate of St.Romanos fight with excellent courage as a simple soldier without surending the Empire to the Turkish Sultan. That gave the ethical strength to the enslaved Greek Nation to live during the barbaric Turkish occupation from 1453 since 1821 that the children of Greece managed to throw away Turkish tyranny and be reborn ed as a state. A good directing cannot occur without a well-written script (from Aristotle's Poetics up to present) the story will be developed through treatment and step outline, to a rough draft, and finally, a finished script (100 pages) for a full production for a feature film. We will continue at all times to improve our script with media training programmes for the best possible script editing using: plot analysis, character arcs, dialogues, theme, voice over, style and tone, visualizatios (visual storybords), creating characters & development. Using advance scriptwriting tools, methods and analysis the sript with decoupage and visually editing storyboards will form the soul of the production. Our script will be the basis for the start of filming. Having in mind that organization and responsibility makes QUALITY (continuous improvement), we will form a quality assurance system in all our activities for the best possible results. A good development to a full production for a feature film will guided with a very good planning and development strategy having in mind tools of advance research and planning/design so to be consistency with development budget estimate. Using script breakdowns and methods we will plan and keep to a schedule and on budget for our production. The MEDIA support will be helpful for a very good design of development to a full production for a feature film, careful considerations of casting issues, unions, rehearsal space and time, managing, lining the script, breakdown forms and other issues for a comprehensive design of a pre-production period to form realistic plans for making our film successfully. A good script with the best possible planning can become a great film for distribution, promotion and festivals. Marketing and distribution strategy will be strategically planned according to European market and in collaboration with media workshops and European co-producers.
